UNESCO Lecture for NSS on the Forts of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

On the occasion of World Tourism Day, the National Service Scheme (NSS) organized a special lecture on the theme “Forts of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the UNESCO World Heritage Nomination.”

The lecture was delivered by Pratap Patil, a fort researcher and a member of the team actively involved in the Maratha Military Landscape UNESCO World Heritage nomination process. During the session, he shared insights into the nomination process of the twelve forts associated with the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which stand as remarkable examples of the Maratha Empire’s strategic planning, architectural ingenuity, and military strength.

The lecture highlighted the historical, cultural, and strategic importance of these forts and explained how heritage sites are evaluated for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Students were introduced to the significance of preserving and documenting historic landscapes and understanding their value within a global heritage framework.

Mr. Patil also spoke about the potential impact that UNESCO recognition could have on heritage tourism in Maharashtra, emphasizing how international recognition can bring global attention to these forts while creating sustainable employment and livelihood opportunities for local communities and youth.

The session aimed not only to provide information but also to encourage students to develop a more informed and observant perspective while visiting forts. Participants were guided on how to notice architectural details, defensive structures, and historical narratives that reflect the rich legacy preserved within these historic sites.

The lecture proved to be an enriching experience for NSS volunteers, highlighting the global significance of Maharashtra’s fort heritage and inspiring students to appreciate, protect, and engage with these historic landscapes responsibly.
